NASAs Terra satellite captured this image of the fires and the smoke pouring off the edge of Australia and into the southern Pacific Ocean on Nov.
Australia fires from space at night. The Australian government responded by calling in 3000 reservists to help battle the fires. In remote places without observers or at night fires can burn for hours before theyre reported. We pulled four before-and-after NASA satellite images and asked a bushfire researcher to reflect on the story they tell.
